New Rights, Responsibilities and Registration Rules; What Are Your Obligations Under the Data Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2002?

This article examines the provisions of the Data Protection Bill, 2002 which is due to be adopted by Dail Eireann during its current session. Data protection is a growth area the importance of which has increased dramatically in recent years in line with the growth in e-commerce. In a FAQ style format, this article asks the questions foremost in the minds of business people in relation to the Bill and seeks, in so far as possible, to give concise answers to these questions. Issues which are addressed include :

- what activities are covered by the Bill;
- how does business ensure it is complying with its obligations under the Bill;
- how does one go about lawfully transferring personal data outside of Ireland under the Bill;
