Third Generation Licences - A Way to a Faster Uphill Climb

Telecom operators and suppliers are currently awaiting details of the selection process for determining which bidders should be granted licences to build third generation networks and provide third generation (3G) mobile services in Ireland. The author considers the potential impact of the proposed licensing structure on the development of the Irish mobile telecommunications industry, comparing the proposed structure to others already in operation within the EU. Also considered is the concept and importance to 3G of infrastructure sharing and the proposed form that infrastructure sharing will take in Ireland. Issues unique to the Irish mobile telecommunications industry are identified and discussed.
